   Hamilton Island

Originally known as Passage Island, it was Percy Kean who wrote to the Lands Department in 1896 successfully requesting the island be opened for ccupation. While it isnot clear, it seemscertain Kean placed shee on Hamilton Island but it is likely he lived there in any permanent sense. A Dr. Ball then leased the island in 1922 attempting to grow Paw Paw (unsuccessfully) and in the late 19620sit was taken over by Dr. MacDonald for cattle grazing. In the mid 1940s Skip Moody (of Daydream) took over the lease. It wasn't till 1976 that Keith Williams became involved in the island now called Hamilton. Finally in 1982 Keith Williams commenced building his dream and in 1984 it was opened to the public, but development and building kept going and forging ahead. 70% of the island is still National Park and in its original state. The airport is built mainly on reclaimed land, the marina has been completely dredged and the resort is on the Eastern side, situated overlooking Cats Eye Bay. In 1988 Hamilton Island became an official Australian port. Hamilton Island is the major resort here in the Whitsunday's. It's the largest offshore Island Resortin Australia. Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island in the Whitsunday's and here you will find a wide variety of things to see and do, including outiques and specialty stores, galleries, bars, cafes and restaurants. There are also over 40 different activities, with everything from jet ski and quad bike tours, to parasailing, windsurfing, hang-gliding, target shooting,
bushwalking go-karting or simply relaxing by one of the many pools or on beautiful Catseye Beach. Whether you are looking for action-packed adventure or laid back relaxation, you'll find it on Hamilton Island. Feel free to visit the Tour Desk located at the Resort

   Whitsunday Island

Whitsunday Island is the largest in the Whitsunday group of islands. Whitehaven Beach is located on the eastern side of Whitsunday Island which is an undeveloped National Park. The white silicon sand is minute powder-size grains of quartz and has been analysed at 99.89% pure, well above the minimum requirement for glassmaking and suitable for the finest glass for optical lenses or for binoculars etc. Because of the quality and size of the sand deposit; it is estimated at 800 million tonnes, there have been many moves over the years to mine the area. The beach is now protected under the Whitsunday Plan of Management and is located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

When Whitehaven Beach is viewed from the east side of the bay it is evident the sand has been piled up in distinct terraces behind the beach and now is covered with a stabilising growth of vegetation. This suggests the sea-level in the area is lower now than at some previous time. However, post-glacial sea-levels, following the last Ice-Age, at present are at historically high levels and the terraces behind the beach (and other features in the general area) suggest there has been an up-lifting of the land rather than a lowering of sea level. The origin of the sand has not been conclusively explained.

The waters off Whitehaven Beach are quite shallow but host an array of marine life. Keep an eye out for dugongs, stingrays, turtles and fish. Marine stingers are present during the summer months and some have been detected during winter. Most are harmless; however, a sting from a jellyfish known as the Irukandji may require emergency medical treatment. The initial sting may not be noticed but symptoms such as breathing difficulties and severe pain can appear after a delay of 5-40 minutes. As your safety is of utmost importance to us we strongly recommend that if you choose to swim in the ocean you always swim in the presence of others and wear a stinger suit at all times. Fantasea Adventure Cruising offers a limited supply of Iycra (stinger) suits for use whilst swimming. These will offer some protection to only the covered parts of your body. If you think you have been stung, please seek medical advice from one of our crew.
